LOGANBERRY: A HYBRID BERRY



What is Loganberry??

A loganberry is a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. It was produced by accident in Oregon in the 1800s by James Harvey Logan. He had a casual interest in gardening. According to popular legend, he planted some blackberry canes close to some raspberries and the loganberry was born. 

It is a dark red or purple in colour; the berries are juicy and have a sharp flavour. It has been originated in Santa Cruz, California. It is available in canned, frozen and raw form. 

Scientific Background:

Loganberry is the species of bramble of the rose family (Rosaceae) and its scientific name is Rubus loganobaccus. 


Nutrients present in Loganberries:

Loganberry is packed with nutrients. It is the excellent source of manganese, vitamin C, Panthothenic acid (Vitamin B5), iron, folate, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), magnesium, potassium, choline, selenium, zinc, phosphorus, calcium and some traces amount of copper and sodium.  It is also high in fibre and low in cholesterol and saturated fat.

Benefits of Loganberries:

Aids in Weight loss: 

As it is high in fibre and low in fat and cholesterol, the loganberry helps in losing weight. The manganese content helps in increasing metabolic rate, hence contributes to burning fat. The fibre gives the feeling of fullness leading to weight loss. 

Improves the immune system and boost digestion: 

It is packed with antioxidants and antioxidants are highly relevant for bettering one’s immunity. The anthocyanins present in them also as antioxidants which help to kill free radicals protecting the body from illness, oxidative stress and external toxins. It also helps in improving acidity, indigestion and irregular bowel movements hence boosting digestion.

Prevents cancer:

According to some studies, it helps in preventing cancerous cells in the body due to its antioxidants and antimicrobial properties.

Elevates brain health:

Loganberry is rich in thiamine, which helps to maintain a healthy nervous system. The folic acid and manganese present in this berry help to also to improve DNA synthesis. 

Promotes heart health:

Due to the presence of manganese and fibre, loganberry protects the body from coronary heart diseases. 

Limits macular degeneration:

Rich in vitamin A, the berry is beneficial for improving eye health hence helps to fight the onset of macular degeneration.

Combats asthma:

The high content of vitamin C makes it beneficial in keeping the respiratory system running smoothly.

Lowers blood sugar levels:

A study has shown that loganberries in reducing and maintaining the sugar levels in the blood hence beneficial for individuals with diabetes.

Prevents blood clotting:

It is rich in vitamin K which helps to prevent the sudden clotting of blood, thereby promoting protein synthesis for healthy bones as well as tissues.

Improves skin health:

Loganberry helps in rejuvenating one’s skin, cleanses the skin and deals with different skin issues like acne, eczema and pimples. It gives the skin a natural young glow and reduces wrinkles and blemishes. 

How to incorporate Loganberries in one’s diet??

Loganberries can be added to your normal garden salads, ice creams, and sorbets, added to cooked compotes or syrups, added to smoothies or cocktails.  

People can make jams or jellies or preserve or candy of it. Loganberries can be used for flavouring, liquors or wine. 

It can also be used in pies, cakes and other baked goods. Very ripe loganberries can be freshly eaten raw. 


Availability of Loganberries:

Loganberries and its products are available in supermarkets as well as online throughout the world in frozen or canned or raw form.
